Purpose 

This policy outlines Peter Lang Group’s commitment to protecting its authors from online harassment, threats, and abuse, particularly when their work touches on sensitive or controversial topics. 

 

Scope 

This policy applies to all authors published by Peter Lang Group, regardless of the subject matter of their work. 

 

Definition of Online Trolling and Hate 

Online trolling and hate are defined as any form of online harassment, abuse, or threat directed at an author that is: 

  • Personal: Targeting the author’s identity, character, or reputation. 
  • Abusive: Using offensive, insulting, or threatening language. 
  • Discriminatory: Based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or other protected characteristics. 
  • Harassing: Repeatedly targeting the author with unwanted or malicious communication. 

 

Company Response to Online Trolling and Hate 

  1. Monitoring and Reporting: 
  • The company will monitor their own social media platforms for instances of online trolling and hate directed at its authors. 
  • The company will report instances of severe or persistent harassment to the relevant social media platforms or authorities. 
  1. Author Support: 
  • The company will offer support to authors who are experiencing online trolling or hate. 
  • This support may include:  
  • Providing guidance on how to respond to online harassment. 
  • Collaborating with the author to develop a strategy for addressing ongoing harassment. 
  1. Public Statement: 
  • In cases of severe or persistent harassment, the company may issue a public statement condemning the behaviour and expressing support for the author. 
  1. Legal Action: 
  • In cases of extreme harassment or threats of violence, the company may take legal action against the perpetrators. 

 

Author Responsibilities 

While Peter Lang Group will take steps to protect its authors, authors are also expected to: 

  • Avoid engaging with trolls: Responding to trolls can often escalate the situation. 
  • Document incidents: Keep records of all instances of online harassment, including screenshots and timestamps. 
  • Report incidents to the company: Inform the company of any instances of online trolling or hate outside of Peter Lang social pages. 
  • Follow company guidelines: Adhere to best practice guidelines on social media use and online conduct. 

Review and Update 

This policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure its effectiveness and relevance. 

By implementing this policy, Peter Lang Group aims to create a safe and supportive environment for all of its authors.
